Republican Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to the post of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Trump praised Haley's diplomatic skills as he announced his pick.
“Governor Haley has a proven track record of bringing people together regardless of background or party affiliation to move critical policies forward for the betterment of her state and our country,” Trump said, reports the Daily Mail.
Trump called Haley a “proven dealmaker” and added: “We look to be making plenty of deals,” notes the Daily Mail. “She will be a great leader representing us on the world stage.”
Haley, 44, is the daughter of Indian Sikh immigrants, and her husband, Michael, is a Christian and an officer in the Army National Guard.
Haley served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011 before becoming the state’s governor.
In 2015, Time Magazine named her as one of the 100 Most Influential People.
"She became the first woman and the first minority to lead the state,” Sarah McCammon told NPR. “And she's currently the youngest sitting governor in the country."
Haley was a Marco Rubio supporter during the primaries, and actively opposed Trump.
“Donald Trump is everything I taught my children not to do in kindergarten," she said.
Haley’s endorsement of Trump came only after he won the Republican primaries.
"It does start to sound like a bit of a team of rivals," Domenico Montanaro said. "I think it also tells you that Donald Trump doesn't have many connections to a lot of these leaders — he doesn't have a whole team he'd be bringing on board ... and a lot of that is because he just doesn't have the connections in Washington."
"This month's elections have brought exciting changes to America,” Haley wrote in a statement following her nomination, reports NPR. “Our country faces enormous challenges here at home and internationally … When the President believes you have a major contribution to make to the welfare of our nation, and to our nation's standing in the world, that is a calling that is important to heed."
