Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took to Twitter on Nov. 19 to unload a tirade on fellow GOP candidate Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
After learning that a Kasich super political action committee would invest big money in negative ads against Trump in the New Hampshire caucus, Trump ripped into Kasich, calling him a “dud” and threatening to “sue him just for fun!”
It can be hard to imagine Trump feeling threatened by the Ohio governor, who has only claimed a small percentage of the electorate. According to a Nov. 19 survey released by Public Policy Polling, Trump is leading the GOP field with 26 percent while Kasich trails far behind at 3 percent. Kasich is currently polling alongside New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whose numbers had shrunk so much that he had been demoted to the undercard debate.
It was announced on Nov. 19 that a Kasich super PAC, New Day for America, will spend $2.5 million in a sustained media blitz in New Hampshire over the next two months that will focus on illustrating why Trump is not qualified for the presidency, Politico reports.
While his own candidacy may be failing to make an impression of Republican voters, Kasich has not been shy about his disgust with Trump’s policy proposals, particularly the business mogul’s call for deporting 11 million immigrants in the country illegally. Even as his chances at securing the Republican presidential nomination fade, it’s clear Kasich and his backers will do what they can to deny Trump his front-runner status.
New Day for America spokesman Matt David told Politico it will “be the tip of the spear against Trump.”
Trump, in response to the announcement, took to social media to fire off scathing tweets against Kasich over the course of an hour, Business Insider reports.
“Governor Kasich should focus his special interest money on building up his failed image, not negative ads on me,” the business mogul wrote, according to Business Insider.
“John Kasich, despite being Governor of Ohio, is losing to me in the Ohio polls. Pathetic!"
“I want to do negative ads on John Kasich, but he is so irrelevant to the race that I don’t want to waste my money.”
Trump even threatened to sue for defamation if he decides the negative ads portray him inaccurately, Business Insider reports.
“Watch Kasich squirm — if he is not truthful in his negative ads I will sue him just for fun!”
Trump spent the rest of his Twitter rant insulting Kasich and his campaign, listing off the Ohio governor’s poor polling in New Hampshire, his debate performances and his time working as the managing director of Lehman Brothers during the 2008 market crash, Business Insider reports.
Trump labeled Kasich “a complete & total dud!”
New Day for America has confirmed it has already received a letter from The Trump Organization, threatening legal action against the super PAC if the business mogul believes the ads to be inaccurate or defamatory, Business Insider reports.
“Mr. Trump’s been successful in suing his way to financial gain,” said David, reports Business Insider. “Unfortunately, you can’t sue your way to the Oval Office.”
