Corey Lewandowski, the campaign manager of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, was charged with simple battery on March 29 stemming from an incident in Jupiter, Florida, with reporter Michelle Fields on March 8 (video below).
Jupiter Police released surveillance footage from the March 8 Trump campaign event, which appears to show Lewandowski grabbing the ex-Breitbart News reporter (wearing a white jacket), notes The Associated Press.
Fields described the incident in detail, and audio of the encounter was published by POLITICO. Her version was also substantiated by Ben Terris, a reporter at The Washington Post.
The police report, released on March 28, states: "Lewandowski grabbed Fields' left arm with his right hand causing her to turn and step back," and Fields showed police her left forearm, which "appeared to show a grabbing-type injury."
The Trump campaign issued a statement in response to the charges:
"Mr. Lewandowski is absolutely innocent of this charge. He will enter a plea of not guilty and looks forward to his day in court. He is completely confident that he will be exonerated," according to a March 29 tweet by Hadas Gold of POLITICO.
On March 11, Trump accused Fields of making up the entire incident.
"This was, in my opinion, made up," Trump told CNN:
Everybody said nothing happened. Perhaps she made the story up. I think that's what happened.
I heard that nothing happened. You know, we're surrounded by Secret Service. We have many Secret Service. You see some of them here. When we left, I spoke to them. Nothing happened. This was, in my opinion, made up.
Now I didn't see anything. All of a sudden we heard about it later on. But the Secret Service said nothing happened. The Secret Service are amazing people. They said absolutely nothing happened. He [Corey Lewandowski] didn't hear about it until like, the next day.
Lewandowski was asked about the incident by CNN and said, "I'm going to work with Mr. Trump tonight."
When the campaign manager was asked if he touched Fields, he replied, "Did you hear what I said?"
Lewandowski reportedly tweeted that Fields was "delusional."
