Trump: Anti-Semitic Tweet Was Really 'Sheriff's Star'

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is defending a controversial tweet attack against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Trump tweeted a graphic (meme) on July 2 that featured a picture of Clinton, money in the background, the words "History Made," and what appears to be a blood-red Star of David with the text: "Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!"

Think Progress notes that several reporters pointed out what they saw as an anti-Semitic message:

Trump's new anti-Hillary ad is a pile of money overlaid with her face & a star of David. Wonder what the message is?

Any student of the 20th c can tell you exactly what this means: Clinton's money comes fr Jews, is therefore tainted.

Historical perspective: The Jewish moneybag or moneyman is one of the classic tropes of anti-Semitic propaganda.

Trump deleted the tweet only hours later and replaced it with a new one that used a circle instead; although it appeared to be a weak Photoshop fix as the points of the star still peeked out.

Trump defended his original star on July 4: "Dishonest media is trying their absolute best to depict a star in a tweet as the Star of David rather than a Sheriff's Star, or plain star!"

According to, the meme tweeted by Trump originally appeared as early as June 22 on, a message board used by "neo-Nazis, anti-Semites and white supremacists."

The news site notes that the meme includes a tiny watermark that identifies a Twitter user who often "tweets violent, racist memes commenting on the state of geopolitical politics."

Going back further in history, the Nazis forced Jewish people to wear the Star of David on their clothing during Hitler's Holocaust. adds that the meme's original file name was HillHistory.jpg, which may have been a reference to "HH," or "Heil Hitler."

The news site asked the Trump campaign how the meme got from a white supremacist message board to Trump's twitter page, but Trump's team did not respond.
