Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen labeled Tea Party Republicans as “domestic enemies” during an interview on MSNBC on Saturday.
The Daily Caller reports that Tennessee’s Cohen also described them as rabid, sophomoric and in ambitious pursuit of their policies.
“Really, you got to think — we take an oath to support the country against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” Cohen said, according to The Blaze. “These are the domestic enemies.”
Cohen’s comments were aimed at Tea Party members of Congress who voted against the debt deal that raised the U.S.’ borrowing limit and reopened government and he also warned that the Tea Party may try to pursue its shutdown strategy once again.
The Tennessee Democrat Cohen credited Nancy Pelosi and a handful of “reasonable Republicans” for doing the right thing and voting for legislation that raised the debt ceiling and reopened government.
The Daily Caller also reports that Cohen is no stranger to controversy. Back in 2011, he likened attacks on Obamacare to Nazi Germany in a speech on the House floor. He later apologized for those comments.
Red Alert Politics notes that Cohen gained notoriety earlier this year when he tweeted at a female during the State of the Union. Cohen reportedly thought the 25-year-old woman was his daughter, but DNA tests revealed that the two are not related.
