Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas says that “the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.”
During a Nov. 30 sit-down with radio host Hugh Hewitt, the presidential candidate dismissed accusations that his rhetoric against Planned Parenthood helped encourage the Nov. 27 attack in Colorado, CNN reports.
“Every time you have some sort of violent crime or mass killing, you could almost see the media salivating, hoping desperately that the murderer happens to be a Republican so they can use it to try to paint their political enemies,” Cruz said, according to CNN.
Robert Dear, the gunman who killed three people during a standoff at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, reportedly mentioned “baby parts” during his arrest, according to The Huffington Post.
Cruz was asked by reporters on Nov. 29 if this was proof that the GOP’s condemnation of Planned Parenthood had made the women’s healthcare organization a target.
“It’s also been reported that he was registered as an Independent and a woman and a transgendered leftist activist,” Cruz reportedly fired back.
“The media promptly wants to blame him on the pro-life movement when at this point there is very little evidence to suggest that,” he added.
During his appearance on Hewitt’s radio show, Cruz not only denied that GOP rhetoric had anything to do with Dear’s actions but also said that liberals are intentionally “soft on crime ... because convicted felons tend to vote Democrat," he said.
"Now, listen, here's the simple and undeniable facts: The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats,” Cruz said. “The media doesn't report that."
Cruz's campaign has reportedly cited a study published in the January 2014 issue of “The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science” journal to support this claim.
Cruz was unapologetic about his harsh rhetoric against Planned Parenthood during his conversation with Hewitt, citing the controversial viral videos taken by anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress in early 2015.
“They were certainly caught on film, that there is no doubt that they were selling baby parts,” Cruz said, according to The Washington Times.
“If I’m elected president, on the first day in office, I will instruct the U.S. Department of Justice to open an investigation into Planned Parenthood, and to prosecute any and all criminal violations by that organization, because criminal justice should be blind to party or ideology,” he added.
