In an op-ed for USA Today, Republican presidential contender and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas called on the Department of Justice to take action against employees of Planned Parenthood in the wake of recent videos that allegedly show members of the organization discussing the buying and selling of fetal tissue from aborted babies.
Cruz starts off the piece by criticizing the employees of Planned Parenthood that were featured in the videos filmed and posted online by the Center for Medical Progress.
“The footage shows senior Planned Parenthood officials laughing, swilling chardonnay and casually, callously, heartlessly discussing killing unborn children in order to sell their body parts,” Cruz wrote.
He also stated his disagreement with the women’s health organization receiving taxpayer funding.
“An organization that generates a large part of its revenue from terminating innocent life should not receive one penny of taxpayer money and those who engage in what may be criminal activity must be held to account,” he said.
While Cruz has been vocal about his support to federally defund Planned Parenthood, he seemed to take a different approach in the op-ed. He asked that Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky not take up legislation to defund the organization just yet, but let the Department of Justice “investigate and prosecute Planned Parenthood for any potential criminal actions of commercial trafficking of fetal organs.”
Cruz also characterized Planned Parenthood as a “business of killing unborn children on an industrial scale” and listed abortions as the “lifeblood” of the organization.
“Hundreds of thousands of annual abortions generate nearly 40% of Planned Parenthood’s clinic revenues,” Cruz wrote. “Simply put, Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion profiteer.”
However, Cruz defended other women’s health clinics that do not provide abortions but do provide cancer screenings, health check-ups and other services.
“Despite Planned Parenthood’s propaganda, ending taxpayer funding of abortion providers will have little impact on a woman’s access to healthcare. Community health centers, charities, state health departments and other government entities all provide women’s health services without also providing abortions,” Cruz wrote.
Just three weeks ago, Cruz spoke at a pro-life in front of the U.S. Capitol to demand that Planned Parenthood no longer receive federal funds.
“When we’ve seen the truth, after a time for truth comes a time for action. Today is a time for action,” he said. “Today, the U.S. Department of Justice should open a criminal investigation into all of those individuals.
"Today, the U.S. Department of Justice should open up a criminal investigation into whether Planned Parenthood nationally is a criminal enterprise breaking the law.”
