French officials confirmed the death of Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected ringleader of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
Abaaoud died during an overnight raid in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, according to a statement from authorities. DNA samples were used to identify the terrorist’s body, which was “riddled” with bullets.
Abaaoud was a Belgian national who traveled to Syria to join ISIS. He was allegedly responsible for coordinating the attacks that killed 129 people and injured 300 others.
The French authorities should be applauded for their vigilance in going after the terrorists who intend to do their people harm,” White House communications director Jen Psaki said.
“We need to take every threat seriously. Our intelligence authorities are not treating what happened in Paris as a one-off. This is something we are tracking every day.”
There was initial confusion over whether or not Abaaoud was killed in the raid, in which two suspects were killed and seven others were arrested.
