STD Super-Strains Flourish Under Obama Administration

Recalling the Rev. Jeremiah Wright once famously accused the "government … [of] inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color," it is ironic that his protégé, Barack Obama, along with other carriers of the deadly diseases of political correctness and liberal ideology, would actually be the ones guilty of spreading not only HIV but other plagues.

Three significant events of the past two weeks may at first appear unrelated but aren't:

-- Dec. 27, 2009: While researching the worldwide epidemic of drug-resistant diseases, the Associated Press uncovers and reports what has been "dreaded and expected for years – this country's first case of a contagious, aggressive, especially drug-resistant form of tuberculosis." Previously unknown to the public, the AP discloses that now 21-year-old Peruvian exchange student Oswaldo Juarez began treatment in 2007 at the last remaining TB sanitarium in the United States, located in South Florida, for one of only five cases of XXDR TB known worldwide. Symptoms abated, and Juarez was released back into the U.S. in July 2009.

-- Jan. 1, 2010: The state of Illinois becomes the 21st state, along with the city of Baltimore, to enact "expedited partner therapy" legislation. Such laws allow patients being treated for either chlamydia or gonorrhea, both sexually transmitted diseases, to receive as many blank prescriptions or one-time doses of antibiotics as the number of sexual partners they say they have had within the previous 60 days. Minors as young as 12 years old can obtain scripts or meds without parental knowledge.

-- Jan. 4, 2010: The Centers for Disease Control enacts an order by President Obama, lifting the 22-year ban against HIV positive foreigners entering the United States. Pre-admissive HIV testing will no longer be required either, so infected immigrants will be untrackable.

To begin connecting the dots, Homeland Security Today on Dec. 29 reported on the scale of diseases resistant to drug treatment:

[P]hysicians and researchers around the world are expressing growing alarm over the disturbing escalation of a variety of antibiotic-resistant diseases they say are rapidly mutating. Some … fear these diseases will evolve into dominate strains for which we have no new antibiotics to treat the level of resistance that we are now witnessing.

Why is this happening? The Associated Press reported in the aforementioned Juarez piece:

Today, all the leading killer infectious diseases on the planet – TB, malaria and HIV among them – are mutating at an alarming rate, hitchhiking their way in and out of countries. The reason: Overuse and misuse of the very drugs that were supposed to save us.

Just as the drugs were a manmade solution to dangerous illness, the problem with them is also manmade. It is fueled worldwide by everything from counterfeit drugmakers to the unintended consequences of giving drugs to the poor without properly monitoring their treatment.

The AP noted that a new drug-resistant strain of malaria has emerged in Cambodia, "threatening the only treatment left to fight a disease that already kills 1 million people a year." It also reported new drug-resistant strains of HIV have been found in Africa.

Animal diseases are undergoing the same phenomenon, exacerbating animal-human crossovers. Wrote WCJB World News:

It has emerged that animal farmers have developed the habit of excessive use of antibiotics on their livestock. This helps animals grow but is also contributing to the development of new drug-resistant infections, thus putting consumers and themselves in danger. …

Coordinator at the European Surveillance on Antibiotic Consumption, professor Herman Goossens, said that the rate of development of these drug-resistant infections is becoming increasingly rapid, adding that the phenomenon is now happening faster than expected by the scientific community.

So states legislating the distribution of antibiotics for unverified cases of sexually transmitted diseases are only making matters worse.

Speaking of, England's Venereal Diseases Act of 1917 defined three: chancroid, gonorrhea and syphilis, all bacterial.

Today there are over 25 viral (incurable) and bacterial (with hundreds of strains, many antibiotic resistant) STDs.

Interestingly, widespread use of the birth-control pill beginning in the 1960s is being partially blamed for the spread of STDs for two reasons, the increased number of sexual partners and decreased use of condoms.

Today contraceptive advocates suggest using condoms in conjunction with birth-control pills. They also recommend stocking morning-after pills in the medicine cabinet for feared failure of the first two as well as keeping a dental dam (don't ask) in the night stand to guard against infections caught from oral sex.

Meanwhile, they call abstinence education stupid.

There's more – a connection between the TB and HIV "significant events" I listed at the onset of this piece. HS Today reported:

TB has been on the rise since the 1980s, with new infections rising dramatically in Southeast Asia and Africa. Health officials believe TB's resurgence is a direct result of the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in these regions. By 1993,WHO had declared TB to be a global emergency. Fifteen years later, and despite being treatable for decades, TB has become one of the world's major causes of illness and death. …

[F]ive percent of all TB cases … were reported among individuals co-infected with HIV, but of the fatalities, 14 percent were co-infected. …

Dr. David Miller, an outspoken advocate for devoting research dollars to the fight against tuberculosis and an internationally known AIDS treatment activist [said in a statement], "Today, more people with HIV are dying from tuberculosis, a disease with the potential to spread like wildfire in a crowded urban environment."

Political correctness and liberal ideology both cause and aggravate the spread of communicable and sexually transmitted diseases.

And these people want to take over the American health-care system.
