South Dakota Lawmaker Says Planned Parenthood Is Worse Than ISIS

South Dakota lawmaker Isaac Latterell said Planned Parenthood was worse than ISIS and “lying about it.”

Latterell, a Republican member of the state's House of Representatives, wrote a post on his website comparing the non-profit reproductive health organization to the terrorist group.

“Planned Parenthood abortionists in Sioux Falls are similarly beheading unborn children during dismemberment abortions,” Latterell’s post read. “Most people are unaware that this is happening, because Planned Parenthood of Sioux Falls denies that they behead or otherwise dismember unborn children.”

The post was meant to coincide with Latterell’s introduction of a piece of legislation, called the “Preborn Infant Beheading Ban," which would block healthcare providers from performing “the beheading of certain living unborn children and to provide penalties therefor.” Under the bill, physicians who perform such procedures, which are part of second-trimester abortions, would face up to 50 years behind bars.

According to Latterell, the controversial procedure has been performed in his state seven times since 2008.

“While we rightly take the speck out of our neighbor’s eye by holding ISIS accountable, let us be sure to take the plank out of our own eye by holding Planned Parenthood accountable,” he wrote, paraphrasing the Bible.

Planned Parenthood quickly responded to Latterell’s post, rejecting the comparison.

“I think the majority of South Dakotans would agree that comparing Planned Parenthood to a terrorist organization is just going too far," spokesperson Jennifer Aulwes told Talking Points Memo. “No matter what you feel about abortion or about Planned Parenthood, it's an inflammatory and really inappropriate comparison."
