The FCC voted today 3-2 to approve the Open Internet Order, which bans Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from favoring or blocking web sites or apps.
The new rule also bans speed throttling (except during periods of general maintenance) and paid fast lanes.
The Open Internet Order will reclassify ISP services as telecommunications services under Title II of the Communications Act, giving the federal government the power to keep corporations from controlling the web, noted The Verge.
Mobile internet services will also fall under this rule, ensuring that all websites and apps continue to operate on neutral ground, without unfair advantages, as they have for decades.
However, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) warned about these changes and others (health care and immigration) during a speech at CPAC today, noted RightWingWatch.org (video below).
"Washington wants Obamacare," stated Sen. Cruz. "The people want liberty. Washington wants amnesty. The people want rule of law. Washington wants power over the Internet. The people want freedom online. And don’t believe President Obama when he says, 'If you like your internet, you can keep your internet!'”
On CBN this morning, televangelist Pat Robertson claimed warned that the new net neutrality rule was part of a "socialist agenda," reported RightWingWatch.org (video below).
“The Obama people, you don’t understand, ladies and gentlemen, do you realize the socialist agenda is to take control of everything," warned Robertson. "They can't, they've got their hands on health care and they’re about to ruin it, now they want to ruin the internet. And I don’t know what we can do to stop it.”
