Sen. Marco Rubio Warns Obama Will Legalize Immigrants If Congress Fails to Pass Immigration Reform

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio warned Congress on Tuesday that President Barack Obama might legalize 11 million immigrants with an executive order if it does not pass immigration reform soon.

Rubio made the comment on “The Morning Show with Preston Scott” on Tallahassee radio station WFLA.

Rubio insisted that because Obama took action to legalize illegal immigrant children last year, he would not hesitate to do the same for other people who reside in the United States illegally.

“If nothing happens in Congress,” Rubio said, Obama will “basically legalize 11 million people by the sign of a pen.”

Simply allowing those 11 million illegal immigrants to become U.S. citizens would strip the benefits from the immigration reform bill, including border security, border agents and E-Verify.

White House spokesman Bobby Whithome, however, denied Rubio’s accusations and added that the only solution is for Congress to fix the broken immigration system. Many advocates on the left, who have ties to the White House and who seek immigration reform, say it is too premature to consider an executive order on the issue.

Under pressure from reform advocates, some House Republicans have verified their support of the path to citizenship. Others say they plan to proceed with individual bills, beginning with border security, though it could be some time before a package deal lands on Obama’s desk.
