A senior Republican senator is demanding the resignation of the head of the Justice Department's criminal division over his bungled handling of the "Fast and Furious" debacle.
Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley said Wednesday that Attorney General Eric Holder “needs to ask for Mr. (Lanny) Breuer’s resignation and remove him from office if he refuses."
Grassley said Breuer needs to go because of his early denials of the program's details, which allowed guns purchased illegally in the United States to make their way to the Mexican drug cartels. The guns were supposed to be tracked, but agents lost track of many of them.
The Washington Post reports that Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler said Breuer had “acknowledged his mistake” in not alerting Justice heads about the program.
Testifying before the Senate last month, Holder expressed support for Breuer. “I don’t expect to hear a resignation offer from Mr. Breuer,” he said.
