Former half-term Alaska governor and Fox News correspondent Sarah Palin recently claimed that if the debt ceiling isn't raised (by the Republican controlled-House) and the U.S. defaults on its debt, then President Obama can be impeached.
According to TalkingPointsMemo.com, Palin claimed that President Obama will also risk being impeached if he tries to raise the debt ceiling with the Fourteenth Amendment.
Palin wrote on her Facebook page today:
It’s time for the president to be honest with the American people for a change. Defaulting on our national debt is an impeachable offense, and any attempt by President Obama to unilaterally raise the debt limit without Congress is also an impeachable offense. A default would also be a shameful lack of leadership, just as mindlessly increasing our debt without trying to rein in spending is a betrayal of our children and grandchildren who will be stuck with the bill.
Palin did not specifically mention how Obama would be impeached if the House refused to raise the debt ceiling and caused the U.S. to default on its debt.
However, her logic was repeated by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), who opposes raising the debt ceiling, yet wants President Obama to be impeached if the debt ceiling isn't raised, reports CrooksandLiars.com (video below).
When asked if he would allow the U.S. to default on its debt by not raising the debt ceiling, Rep. Louie Gohmert said, "No, that would be an impeachable offense by the president."
But like Palin, Rep. Gohmert didn't cite the law for impeachment (video below).
