Rick Perry Quits Presidential Race, Endorses Newt Gingrich

The field for the Republican nomination narrowed further Thursday with Rick Perry dropping out of the race and throwing his support behind Newt Gingrich.

"Newt is not perfect, but who among us is? The fact is, there is forgiveness for those who seek God," Perry said at a morning news conference in Charleston.

Perry shot to the top of the polls when he announced his candidacy last summer, but then he opened his mouth. His debate performances were filled with gaffes and incomprehensible ramblings, and his stock quickly dropped.

He was a non-factor in Iowa and New Hampshire and he had staked his hopes in South Carolina, where the Texas governor was hoping to connect with like-minded Southern conservative voters. But he was polling at just 5% and instead of suffering a humiliating defeat, Perry chose to drop out two days before the primary.
