GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry is denying speculation that he was under the influence of anything during that bizarre speech in New Hampshire.
Video of last week's speech which has swept the Internet shows a giggly and joking Perry, widely waving his hands and generally acting unlike the person we have seen in the past. However speaking at length for the first time about it, Perry told the San Francisco Chronicle that it was "a pretty typical speech for me."
He said, "I've probably given 1,000 speeches. There are some that have been probably boring, some that have been animated, some that have been in between."
There has been speculation that perhaps Perry was feeling the effects of pain medication from his recent back surgery. Perry denied that. "No. I was just giving a speech... I had spine surgery on the first of July, but I ran this morning."
Others say he looked drunk, to which Perry replied, "It wasn't that either."
Perry said he thought the speech was successful.
"Ask the people who were there, not some political opponent who has put a video up. The people there were responding to the speech, clapping at all the right places -- and there was a standing ovation at the end."
