Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump might have some dirt on Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes.
In a profile of Trump published in New York Magazine, published on April 3, the billionaire mogul revealed that he helped Ailes in the severance negotiations between the Fox News honcho and his longtime PR adviser, Brian Lewis. During the negotiations, Lewis claimed he had "bombs" to reveal about his old boss.
"When Roger was having problems, he didn’t call 97 people, he called me," Trump told New York Magazine.
"Roger had lawyers, very expensive lawyers, and they couldn’t do anything," he added. "I solved the problem."
Ailes and Lewis eventually came to a $8 million agreement and Lewis reportedly agreed to go away quietly. But during those negotiations, Trump learned a great deal about Ailes – and he might not be afraid to reveal that information.
"If Ailes ever truly went to war against Trump, Trump would have the arsenal to launch a retaliatory strike,” New York Magazine reporter Gabriel Sherman wrote in the profile.
Sherman previously wrote an unflattering biography about Ailes that led to the parting of ways between Ailes and Lewis. Following Sherman's biography, Ailes reportedly suspected that Lewis was leaking information to the media.
It's not yet clear what "bombs" Lewis had on Ailes. But as Gawker pointed out, whatever it is must be of high concern to Fox News.
In 2013, when the negotiations between Ailes and Lewis began, Lewis' attorney, Judd Berstein (who worked for Trump briefly during the 90s), told Gawker:
I have just been retained and am still plotting our course of action. But two things are very clear to me. First, Brian Lewis no longer has any confidentiality obligation to Newscorp or Roger Ailes because of the false and malicious statements made by Fox to date. Second, Roger Ailes and Newscorp have a lot more to fear from Brian Lewis telling the truth about them than Brian Lewis has to fear from Roger Ailes and his toadies telling lies about Brian Lewis.
Whatever Lewis had to say, Fox News reportedly considered it worth $8 million to keep him quiet. But Trump was there to listen in on the dirt.
