Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told the internet radio show 'The Voice of Freedom' on Thursday that Republicans must oppose gun control to protect America from Sharia Law, which does not exist in the U.S. (audio below).
According to Mediaite.com, Rep. Gohmert said: "[The Second Amendment] is for our protection and the founders’ quotes make that very very clear and including against a government that would run amuck. We’ve got some people who think Sharia Law should be the law of the land, forget the Constitution. But the guns are there… to make sure all of the rest of the Amendments are followed."
Last year, Rep. Gohmert supported an investigation of then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's aide Huma Abedin for her supposed ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which were never proven. Even Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) repudiated the false claims against Abedin.
Today, in response to Rep. Louie Gohmert's recent comments, Interfaith Alliance President Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy sent a letter asking the Congressman to stop demonizing Islam and seeking to disenfrancise the American Muslim community.
Rev. Gaddy also included with his letter a copy of Interfaith Alliance's 'What is the Truth About American Muslims: Questions and Answers,' which was recently produced in collaboration with the Religious Freedom Education Project of the First Amendment Center.
