On Oct. 2, Democratic Congressman Al Green of Texas temporarily set aside plans to impeach President Donald Trump in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting attack (video below).
The politician previously planned to file impeachment articles the same week, thus triggering off a floor vote within two days, reports Fox News.
He had announced the decision while condemning Trump's response to kneeling NFL players.
"I rise to denounce these comments that have been made because they have brought discourse to a new low," he said. "I will stand here in the well of the Congress and I will call for the impeachment of the president."
However, after a mass shooting killed at least 59 people and wounded more than 500 at an Oct. 1 concert in Las Vegas, Green postponed filing the resolution.
"Our nation is in mourning," explained Green, CSPAN reports. "Many hearts are bleeding. Mr. Speaker, there is much suffering. Lives have been lost in a senseless, needless manner in Las Vegas. Mr. Speaker, there is a right time for all things. This is a time for our nation to mourn and for hearts to heal. Mr. Speaker, I announce that impeachment is postponed. Let us mourn. Let us heal."
His comments provoked a range of responses from those on the internet.
Some, who supported the impeachment process to begin for Trump, criticized Green for the move.
"Too bad," wrote one person on The Hill's comments section. "Now trump is going to think that every mass shooting will delay his impeachment. No one will be safe!!"
"Gee, remember all the lives lost in Iraq from GWB's illegal invasion, and back then the Democrats took impeachment [off] the table," commented another on YouTube. "Trump's illegal missile attack on Syria was blatant violation of 1973 War Powers Act, the constitution and a plethora of treaties ratified by congress. Rep. Al Green, you sir, are a coward!"
Others doubted the sincerity of Green's remarks.
"Good excuse to avoid the embarrassment which would have resulted from calling for impeachment," said one.
"Kicking the can down the road, because integrity," wrote another. "I don't buy it."
"I would think that this would be the time to ratchet up impeachment," chimed in Rush Limbaugh on his show. "I mean, if you’re really gonna go impeach Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors and so forth, this is his audience out there getting shot. If they hadn’t gone, they wouldn’t have gotten shot, the way these people think. But I just wanted you to hear for yourself that impeachment has been postponed, kind of like a rain delay. We don’t know when it’s gonna be brought back. Here we have a bunch of Democrats parading to the floor of the Senate to politicize the shooting."
