Rep. Bill O'Brien: Obamacare As Destructive To ‘Individual Liberty As Fugitive Slave Act’

A New Hampshire politician, Rep. Bill O'Brien recently compared the Affordable Care Act to the Fugitive Slave Act during an Americans for Prosperity rally on Thursday.

"And what is Obamacare?" O'Brien said. "It is a law as destructive to personal and individual liberty as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 that allowed slave owners to come to New Hampshire and seize African-Americans and use the federal courts to take them back to federal ... to slave states."

O'Brien continued: "Barack Obama and our allies fooled us long enough to pass a law that is clearly among the worst ever enacted by Congress."

O'Brien, who is currently exploring a run for Congress, is supported by the Tea Party. He apparently made the comments while he was standing in front of a statue of John Parker Hale, a senator who took a stand against slavery in the 1800s, The Huffington Post reported.

"Bill O'Brien's painful and gross comparison is just the latest in a long line of misleading attacks and rhetoric promoted by the same special interests who opposed health reform in the first place," said Zandra Rice Hawkins, the executive director at Granite State Progress. According to Hawkins, Americans for Prosperity are trying to make health coverage expansion "as scary and burdensome as possible."

She added: “Real health-care advocates care about getting people covered. AFP is using health care as a political wedge. We had funding available to the state to do outreach and education so that citizens could learn about the reform and make real choices. Now we’re hearing a lot of rhetoric instead, politicizing the issue for partisan reasons, purposely blocking the opportunity for actual advocates to educate the public.”
