A member of the Black Congressional Caucus is under fire for comments he made about the Tea Party -- that its members would like to see black people "hanging on a tree."
The New York Daily News reports that video has surfaced of Indiana Rep. Andre Carson making the comments at a jobs event in Miami last week. Glenn Beck's website The Blaze was kind enough to post the video.
The clip includes audio of Carson saying, "We have seen change in Congress... The Tea Party is stopping that change. This is the beyond symbolic change. This is the effort that we are seeing of Jim Crow. Some of these folks in Congress would love to see us as second class citizens. Some of them in Congress of this Tea Party movement would love to see you and me... hanging on a tree."
A spokesman confirmed that it was indeed Carson who made the comments.
"The Tea Party is protecting its millionaire and oil company friends while gutting critical services that they know protect the livelihood of African-Americans, as well as Latinos and other disadvantaged minorities," Jason Tomsci said. "So, yes, the congressman used strong language because the Tea Party agenda jeopardizes our most vulnerable and leaves them without the ability to improve their economic standing."
Tea Party Patriots spokeswoman Jenny Beth Martin told the News the comments were "ridiculous" and "outlandish."
The video begins with Carson's statement, then goes on to include comments from other politicians:
