An unidentified gunman opened fire on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Nov. 27, killing two civilians and one police officer, and wounding nine other people (video below).
During a six-hour stand-off with police, the gunman was holed up inside the clinic and firing at officers, reported CNN.
Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, issued a statement: "We don't yet know the full circumstances and motives behind this criminal action, and we don't yet know if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack. We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country. We will never back away from providing care in a safe, supportive environment that millions of people rely on and trust."
During the stand-off, CNN host Brianna Kevlar mentioned Cowart's statement to Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who opposes Planned Parenthood, noted CrooksAndLiars.com.
Yeah, when I heard that statement, I thought that was very premature. We may find out that this person was targeting Planned Parenthood. If we find out that he was not targeting Planned Parenthood, I would fully expect an apology from the Planned Parenthood director for saying that.
But regardless, if somebody is targeting Planned Parenthood, it's not indicative of what folks who are opposed to some of the practices Planned Parenthood commits, how we feel. We saw these barbaric videos and that was something that many of us have a legitimate concern about. That doesn't mean we're going to take guns, and walk into Planned Parenthood clinics.
Obviously, this is a person that has a mental health issue, that's to some level psychotic and crazy. And if he's targeting Planned Parenthood, and again we don't know if he is, he has taken a legitimate disagreement with a practice and turned it into an evil response, which is to go in and shoot people, but again, we don't know that answer yet, and I'm sure we'll be finding it out shortly.
Kinzinger did not say exactly what "barbaric" acts Planned Parenthood committed on the undercover videos that were released over the summer. The Daily Dot noted in September that six states investigated the organization after the videos and came up empty.
Police captured the gunman, who was identified as 57-year-old Robert Lewis Dear, according to NPR. Dear's motive for the shooting has yet to be confirmed.
