Pro-Life Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais Pressured Mistress to have Abortion

Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-TN), who has backed anti-abortion legislation, reportedly pressured his mistress to have an abortion.

Rep. DesJarlais had an affair with an unidentified patient whom he pressured to terminate her pregnancy in September 2000, reports

The story is based on the transcript of a phone call, which was recorded by Rep. DesJarlais.

Part of the transcript reads: “I’ve been going crazy. I mean, if Susan [his wife at the time] could talk to you, she’d tell you that I’ve been psychotic for months over this. If we need to go to Atlanta, or whatever, to get this solved and get it over with so we can get on with our lives, then let’s do it."

In a statement, Rep. DesJarlais did not deny the story: "Desperate personal attacks do not solve our nation’s problems. Yet it appears my opponents are choosing to once again engage in the same gutter politics that CBS news called the dirtiest in the nation just 2 years ago.”

Rep. DesJarlais told the Chattanooga Times Free-Press in August: “I have been a consistent supporter of pro-life values. This bipartisan bill simply prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to perform abortions. Human life is sacred and taxpayer funding of abortion is counter to the values a great many Tennesseans hold."

On one of his Twitter profiles, Rep. Desjarlais says that he is a "proud father, family man and physician."
