Poll: Most Americans Are Indifferent to Santa’s Race, Republicans Maintain That Santa is White

The results of a recent YouGov/HuffPost poll reveal that most Americans don’t care about race in regards to Santa Claus. The Republicans who were surveyed, however, maintain that Santa should only be portrayed as white.

The topic of Santa’s race recently entered public debate when Fox News host Megyn Kelly assured kids that both Jesus Christ and Santa Claus are white. Additionally, a teacher in Albuquerque, N.M., was recently disciplined for telling a black student that Santa is actually white.

However, according to the survey, most Americans tend not to care either way.

When asked whether they thought Santa Claus should be portrayed as white or some other race, 60 percent of participants said it doesn’t matter, 31 percent said Santa should be white, 4 percent said he should be some other race, and 5 percent said they weren’t sure.

According to the Huffington Post, Democrats (by a 68 percent to 20 percent margin) and independents (by a 61 percent to 31 percent margin) said that they don’t care what race Santa is portrayed as. By contrast, 49 percent of Republicans said they think Santa should be white.

Similarly, when asked whether they believed it was confusing for children if Santa is not always portrayed as being white, more than half (54 percent) of all participants responded said no.

The survey’s final questioned asked participants whether or not they regularly watch Fox News. According to the Huffington Post, 41 percent of those who said they often watch Fox News said they think Santa should be portrayed as white, while 47 percent said it doesn't matter.

Sixty-one percent of participants who said they only watch Fox News sometimes said Santa’s race doesn’t matter, as did more than 60 percent of those who watch the channel rarely or never.

This survey interviewed 1,000 people in the U.S. during the week of Dec. 17-18, 2013. A detailed outline of the poll results can be seen here.
