Planned Parenthood has issued a statement calling Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina a liar for her remarks at the GOP debate on Wednesday night about videos released earlier this year by anti-abortion activists.
"I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, to watch these tapes. Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says, 'We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain,'" the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard said at the GOP presidential debate during a discussion on whether to end funding for Planned Parenthood.
The videos Fiorina was referring to were released by the Center for American Progress and claimed to show Planned Parenthood officials discussing the illegal act of selling fetal tissue for profit and modifying abortions in order to have intact specimens to sell. The videos were found to be manipulated and unreliable for any official inquiry by an independent analysis, Opposing Views reported.
"The images show nothing like what Carly Fiorina said they do, and they have nothing to do with Planned Parenthood. The video footage that she claims exists — and that she 'dared' people to watch — does not exist," Planned Parenthood spokesman Eric Ferrero said in a memo released via email Thursday, Politico reports. "We have a word for that: It’s a lie. And it’s not the first time Carly Fiorina has lied."
Fiorina is not backing down from her claim that such images do exist.
“[A]nalysts who have watched all 12 plus hours say the scene you describe … actually isn’t in those tapes. Did you misspeak?” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked Fiorina Thursday morning during an interview on “Good Morning America” (video below).
“No, I didn’t misspeak,” Fiorina replied. “I have seen those images.”
Fiorina went on to add that Planed Parenthood needs to be defunded.
“This kind of butchery erodes at the character of our nation,” Fiorina said.
Stephanopoulas stated that an analyst who has watched all 12 hours of the video footage stands behind the fact that the images she describes are not there.
“Either Fiorina hasn’t watched the Planned Parenthood videos or she is knowingly misrepresenting the footage because what she says happens in the Planned Parenthood videos simply does not exist,” the analyst said in a statement.
“Rest assured, I have seen the images that I talked about last night,” Fiorina said. “Rest assured that human lives are being aborted fully formed, in order to harvest body parts.”
Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund sent a message to Fiorina’s campaign headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, inviting her to visit one of the company’s health centers, Politico reports.
"I am writing to tell you directly that your claims are completely false and that the video footage you described simply does not exist,” Laguens added in the message. “Literally, there is no such scene on any of the heavily edited, widely discredited videos that have been released by anti-abortion extremists.
"Your statements last night, while vivid and attention-getting, were completely untrue.”
