Republicans have been attempting to distance themselves from Rep. Todd Akin after his comments about "legitimate rape." Now they might have to distance themselves from another one of their own after Tom Smith, a Tea Party-endorsed candidate running against Senator Bob Casey, compared pregnancy out of wedlock to rape in a recent interview with the Associated Press.
During an interview this afternoon, a reporter asked Smith how he would tell a daughter or granddaughter to keep their child when the child was conceived from a rape.
Smith did not hesitate in his reply, quickly stating that he "lived something similar to that with [his] own family."
This similar situation he referred to was his daughter conceiving a child out of wedlock. "She chose life, and I commend her for that. She knew my views, but fortunately for me, I didn't have to…she chose the way I thought. No don't get me wrong, it wasn't rape," Smith said.
Searching for clarification, the reporter asked, "similar how?"
Smith replied, "Uh, having a baby out of wedlock."
"That's similar to rape?" the reporter asked.
"No, no, no, but…put yourself in a father's situation, yes. It is similar. But, back to the original, I'm pro-life, period," Smith said.
Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have prior ties with the Pennsylvania Senate candidate. Smith introduced Ryan at an event last week and also attended a Romney fundraiser last month.
