Republican Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona is under fire from parents who are offended by a lesson that he reportedly taught to second- and third-graders at San Tan Charter School in Gilbert, Arizona, last Thursday (video below).
Parent Scott Campbell told KPHO:
The congressman chose to give an example of the current situation in Iran, and made some inappropriate comments about, "Do you know what a nuclear weapon is? Do you know that there are schools that train children your age to be suicide bombers?"
After school, my daughter was very concerned and said to me that she actually didn't even know really what suicide was and was very afraid.
Salmon's spokesman Tristan Daedalus told The Arizona Republic today that Salmon's staff met with some parents and Salmon had a "pleasant conversation" via phone with some of the concerned folks.
"It was never Congressman Salmon's intention to offend any parents," Daedalus added. "The content of those remarks wasn't anything beyond what children could expect to see or hear on any timely TV or radio newscast."
