Obama Lays Out Education Plan, Endorses Teacher Merit Pay

Publish date:

President Obama appears to be following through on his promise to deliver change to America's public schools, sharply criticizing the education status quo while broadly outlining his plan to improve schools in a speech today before the U.S. Hispanic chamber of Commerce.

During the speech Obama said that the declining quality of the U.S. educational system is "untenable for our economy,
unsustainable for our democracy, and unacceptable for our children." Along with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, he went on to say that his administration will endorse a merit pay system for teachers, increase access to student loans and strive to include parents more in the education process.
