Obama: Anthony Weiner is a "Distraction"

In its first comments about the Anthony Weiner scandal, the White House said Weiner has become a "distraction."

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during a trip to North Carolina on Monday, spokesman Jay Carney said, "The president feels, we feel at the White House, this is a distraction, as Congressman Weiner has said himself, his behavior was inappropriate; dishonesty was inappropriate."

Carney would not say whether Obama thinks Weiner should resign, something even top Democrats are now saying.

Weiner is desperately holding onto his job for now, although the New York Daily News reported on Sunday that he is considering resigning.

Weiner is on a "short leave of absence" from Congress to be treated for his issues, "to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person," his spokeswoman Rita Heller said on Saturday.
