The Obama administration said Israel used “excessive force” against Palestine, and according to many sources implied that the country was guilty of terrorism.
State Department spokesman John Kirby spoke to reports following increased violence throughout Israel.
“I would say certainly individuals on both sides of this divide are – have proven capable of and in our view guilty of acts of terror,” Kirby said, adding that the administration heard “credible reports” that Israel used excessive force in response to Palestinian attacks.
“We’re always concerned about credible reports of excessive use of force against civilians, and we routinely raise our concerns about that,” he said.
Israeli officials criticized Kirby’s remarks, with Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon accusing the Obama administration of “misreading” the conflict. Yaalon maintained that Israeli authorities shot knife-wielding Palestinians in self-defense.
In the last two weeks, seven Israelis and 32 Palestinians were killed as a result of the violence that has increased in the region. Children and protesters were among those shot during anti-Israel demonstrations.
