North Korean Officials Executed for Watching South Korean Soap Operas

Ten members of North Korea’s Workers’ Party were reportedly executed after they were caught watching South Korean soap operas.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reportedly ordered the executions. The victims included several officials who were close to Kim’s uncle, Jang Song-thaek, who was executed last year for crimes he committed against the state, reports the Telegraph.

The 10 officials were reportedly killed by a firing squad and the official reason includes “watching South Korean soap operas, bribery or womanizing,” reports the Daily Mail. The total number of senior government officials executed this year alone in North Korea is now about 50.

Pirated copies of South Korean and Chinese TV programs are reportedly often traded on the black market in North Korea. This fact is one that, along with mobile phones and other forms of technology, has made it extremely difficult for Kim to keep citizens from learning what is happening in other parts of the world.

The details about these executions were reportedly provided by the intelligence service in a report delivered to the South Korean parliament on Tuesday. The move reportedly indicates that Kim is attempting to eliminate those officials who do not support his agenda while he continues to build his own power base in North Korea.
