Newt Gingrich: 1st Wife Wasn't Pretty Enough to be First Lady

Court documents have been unearthed that appear to contradict Newt Gingrich's account of his first divorce.

Gingrich has been famously accused of serving his first wife Jackie Battley divorce papers while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery in 1980. Gingrich denies this, saying they had discussed divorce before she went into the hospital.

The papers show that Gingrich wanted the divorce and that his wife was trying to fight it. Gingrich has claimed that the divorce was her idea.

The New York Daily News reports that former Gingrich campaign treasurer Leonard Carter said Gingrich didn't think Jackie, who was seven years older than Gingrich and was once his high school teacher, was White House material.

"(Gingrich) said, ‘You know and I know that she’s not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of a President,’” Carter told CNN.
