Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) lashed out at current Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) Monday on MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes.”
Pelosi said during her interview that, if Boehner was a woman, he’d be considered “the worst speaker in history.”
Pelosi served for four years as the speaker before Boehner took over, and was asked straight out if she thought he was a weak speaker and a weak leader. Pelosi, obviously, responded yes to both.
"I will say this about John Boehner, and I have a good relationship" with him, Pelosi said. "If he were a woman, they'd be calling him the weakest speaker in history."
Pelosi explained that the Democrats have had to carry the weight in getting bills passed, and that House Republican leaders “have never been able to pass anything without our coming to the rescue” other than their “unprincipled” and “nasty” budgets.
"You know what, if a woman was speaker and nothing was happening in this way, they'd say, 'Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh,'" Pelosi said, referring to the slow-going of bill passage in Congress. "I'm just getting a little, shall we say, tired of some of the ways they take a pass on some and not on others. We get criticized for accomplishing things. They don't get criticized for not accomplishing things."
So far, Boehner has only successfully passed nine bills and joint resolutions this year.
Pelosi, during her time as speaker, was caricatured as a monster by conservative media. But, despite some people’s disdain for Pelosi’s style, she is known to be one of the most productive speakers in history.
