MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry recently filmed a promo (video below) for the cable network in which she was emphasizing the importance of investing in public education, but the conservative media is claiming she wants the state to take children away from their parents.
"We have never invested as much in public education as we should have. We've always had a private notion of children: 'Your kid is yours and totally your responsibility,'" said Harris-Perry. "We haven't had a very collective notion of our children.
"So part of it is we have to break through our private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities. Once it's everybody's responsibility and not just the households, we start making better investments."
Harris-Perry has been slammed by the conservative media, which has often misquoted her.
TheWashington Times blared this inaccurate headline "MSNBC-Melissa Harris-Perry says "Our kids should belong to the state."
Sarah Palin wrote on her Twitter page: "Apparently MSNBC doesn't think your children belong to you. Unflippingbelievable."
The right wing website Newsbusters.org stated: "The notion of collective responsibility for children was a philosophy that undergirded the Cultural Revolution in Communist China under Chairman Mao."
