Mitt Romney Didn't Want Gov. Chris Christie for VP Because of His Weight, Says New Book

According to a new book about the 2012 election, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney turned down New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as a running mate because he was overweight and late to events.

An excerpt from Double Down: Game Change 2012 by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, was recently published by Timemagazine.

According to the book, to be released on Tuesday, one of Romney's advisors, Stuart Stevens, pushed Gov. Christie for the VP slot.

However, Gov. Christie showed up late to Romney campaign events, which bothered the multimillionaire candidate:

Chronically behind schedule, Christie made a habit of showing up late to Romney fundraising events. In May he was so tardy to a donor reception at the Grand Hyatt New York that Mitt wound up taking the stage to speak before Christie arrived. When the Jersey governor finally made his grand entrance, it was as if Mitt had been his warm-up act.

Gov. Christie's weight also hurt him with the GOP nominee, who didn't like overweight people in general:

Mitt also cared about fitness and was prone to poke fun at those who didn’t. (“Oh, there’s your date for tonight,” he would say to male members of his traveling crew when they spied a chunky lady on the street.) Romney marveled at Christie’s girth, his difficulties in making his way down the narrow aisle of the campaign bus. Watching a video of Christie without his suit jacket on, Romney cackled to his aides, “Guys! Look at that!”

According to, Double Down claims that on the Democratic side, former President Bill Clinton was amazed by President Obama's luck and Romney's sloppiness on the campaign trail:

Clinton had watched in wonder as Obama caught break after break. … Meanwhile, Romney’s ineptness staggered Clinton. After the release of the 47 percent video, he remarked to a friend that, while Mitt was a decent man, he was in the wrong line of work. (‘He really shouldn’t be speaking to people in public.’) As for Obama, Clinton trotted out for his pals the same line again and again: "He’s luckier than a dog with two dicks.”
