Republican state Rep. Mike Moon of Missouri uploaded a video (below) of himself killing a chicken to Facebook June 12 to promote his new bill to ban legal abortion.
In the disturbing video, Moon explained how Republican Gov. Eric Greitens of Missouri had called lawmakers to a special session. As Moon killed the chicken and cut the bird open, he talked about God:
When the governor called for the second special session this year, I was right in the middle of my summer job. But like any good career politician, when I get the call, I’m going back to work.
God gave us men dominion over life. He allows us to raise animals properly, and care for them and then process them for food so we can sustain life. And that’s what I’m doing here with this chicken. We’ve been called back to this special session for the primary purpose of supporting life, protecting the unborn specifically.
I think we need to get to the heart of the matter here. So today, I’m filing a bill that will lead to the stopping of abortion in the state of Missouri and I hope you’ll support it.
According to The Huffington Post, Moon’s proposed bill would ban abortion by requiring "due process of law before the life of any human, born or unborn, is ended prior to natural death."
Moon responded to criticism of his video by tweeting on June 12: "Some people seem to be freaking out about the chicken video... I wonder if they know what an abortion is?..."
Moon linked his tweet to his website, where he explains another bill that he proposed earlier in the year to create an abortion display in the state museum.
Alison Dreith, the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri, told The Missouri Times that Moon's video was "theatrics":
Whatever Mike Moon does with a chicken in the privacy of his home is his own business. But we will not let him use the rights of women across Missouri as some kind of political prop. His call to ban abortion is disturbing and dangerous, no matter what he does with that chicken.
According to the newspaper, Moon has filed numerous bills to ban legal abortion, but has not had much success.
Mother Jones reported in January 2016 that Moon co-opted the "Black Lives Matter" movement to oppose abortion with his "All Lives Matter Act" that would have declared a fertilized egg to be a person.
