Political talk show host Mika Brzezinski blasted U.S. President Donald Trump for his controversial tweet against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. Brzezinski asserted that the president had implied that Gillibrand, who has called on him to resign over sexual misconduct allegations, would sleep with him for political favors (video below).
On Dec. 11, Gillibrand called on Donald Trump to resign because over a dozen women had accused him of sexual misconduct.
"President Trump has committed assault, according to these women, and those are very credible allegations of misconduct and criminal activity, and he should be fully investigated and he should resign," Gillibrand told CNN.
Later that day, Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon seconded Gillibrand's position that the allegations against Donald Trump should be investigated by Congress.
On Dec. 12, the president took to social media to accuse Democrats of "moving on to the false accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don't know and/or have never met."
He singled out Gillibrand and not Wyden, CBS News reports.
"Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office 'begging' for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump," the president tweeted out.
Gillibrand responded, "You cannot silence me or the millions of women who have gotten off the sidelines to speak out about the unfitness and shame you have brought to the Oval Office. ... President Trump should resign. But, of course, he won't hold himself accountable. Therefore, Congress should investigate the multiple sexual harassment and assault allegations against him."
Brzezinski voiced outrage over Donald Trump's tweet during a "Morning Joe" segment in Alabama. The host deemed Trump's comments toward Gillibrand to be demeaning and sexist.
"I just want to say something, beyond the fact that it is reprehensible that the president of the United States would say something so derogatory and disgusting about a woman," Brzezinski said, according to MSNBC.
"We're not surprised, Mr. President, you do it all the time. You treat women terribly, and you treat the women around you even worse. You treat women like punching bags because it's fun for you, because you are intimidated by women. That's your problem, okay?"
The host asserted that White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and other Trump administration aides should resign if they chose to defend the president's tweet.
"Read what he put in parentheses and decide what you're going to do at work today. ... Let's just say it, he's suggesting that Kirsten Gillibrand would have sex with him in order to get campaign contributions," Brzezinski concluded. "The president actually tweeted that this morning. ... That tweet was one of the worst things I've seen so far in this presidency."
Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson also weighed in on the president's comments toward Gillibrand.
"What do u mean [Gillibrand] would 'do anything' for campaign contributions?" Carlson tweeted out. "By the way, she isn't a lightweight."
