Michigan State Rep. Lisa Lyons Proposes Tax Breaks for Women Carrying a Fetus

Michigan State Rep. Lisa Lyons (R) has proposed two bills, 684 and 5685, that would offer tax breaks to any woman carrying a fetus that’s more than 12 weeks old.

Pregnant women would be able to claim the fetus as a "dependent" on their taxes for a $4000 tax exemption, reports

Michigan’s nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency estimated that the exemption would cost the cash-strapped state between $5 million to $10 million per year.

Ironically, Michigan Republicans voted in favor of tax reforms that eliminated a $600 per-child tax credit for working poor families, replacing it with a credit of $25.
