Michele Bachmann: Gay Bullying Deaths "Not a Federal Issue"

You'd think nine students committing suicide in one school district over two years, several because of gay bullying, would be an important issue with which to deal. Well, not in Michele Bachmann's America, apparently.

That particular school district, the Anoka-Hennepin system, is in Bachmann's congressional district in Minnesota. Last Friday she was asked during a campaign swing in California what she intends to do about the problem.

"That's not a federal issue," Bachmann said, according to CBS News. And that's all she said, moving on the line to shake more hands.

Bachmann may be wrong -- it just might be a federal issue. The New York Times reports that the Justice Department is investigating anti-gay bullying in the district.

Gay issues have dogged Bachmann on her campaign; she favors a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, and she and her husband own a controversial clinic that features therapy to "cure" gays.
