In an Aug. 15 interview with CNN's Don Lemon, filmmaker Michael Moore likened supporters of President Donald Trump to rape enablers (video below).
"If you hold down the woman while the rapist is raping her, and you didn't rape her, are you a rapist?" Moore asked rhetorically, saying Trump voters were as "racist" as the president.
"If you still support the racist, you are the racist," he later added. "Anybody who votes for and supports a racist is a racist. You are culpable, white America. I’m sorry, but there is redemption for you."
When Lemon told Moore that he would receive "blowback" for the "uncomfortable comparison," Moore responded, “I hope I do. I’ve had it."
Moore was responding to comments Trump made earlier that day about the white nationalist protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia. The protests turned deadly on Aug. 12 when a white nationalist reportedly drove his car into a group of counter-protesters, killing one woman and injuring more than 19.
"What about the alt left that came charging at the, as you say, the alt right?" said Trump in his controversial remarks. "Do they have any semblance of guilt?"
"You look at both sides, I think there’s blame on both sides," Trump added. "I have no doubt about it and you have no doubt about it either ... You had people that were very fine people, on both sides."
Moore went further, saying he believes some Trump supporters approve of the president's words.
"He’s not as stupid as people want to believe he is," Moore said. "He knows exactly what he’s doing, he knows the words to use, and I’m certain that the 63 million people who voted for him, actually the vast, vast majority loved that press conference."
Lemon was correct that Moore would receive "blowback" for the rapist enabler comparison.
"This egotistical, arrogant, pompous a*s has never had anything good to say about any conservative personality," wrote one EW reader. "His verbal assaults against conservative politicians has always sickened me. It's lucky he lives in a country where he can speak his mind. It's a shame so many liberals have such complaisant minds!"
Meanwhile, another person called Moore a "bully against those who expressed their freedom to cast a vote within a government that's supposedly gives those the right to choose."
Others agreed with Moore.
"Michael Moore is not my favorite person in the world," wrote a third. "But he's right. At this point, Trump supporters are racists. Period. If you stand with, support and are enthusiastic about a racist, then you are one. If you want to be a racist, OK. The label should not bother you. But they don't get to reject the title and still support him. You're either one or the other."
