Iconic actress Meryl Streep, a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election, criticized President-elect Donald Trump during her lifetime achievement award acceptance speech at the Golden Globes -- and Trump responded via Twitter.
Although she never said Trump's name, Streep brought up many of Trump's actions, including his talk about building a wall between the United States and Mexico, as well as his campaign jabs about a disabled New York Times reporter and general attacks on the media.
According to a transcript of the speech published by Harper's Bazzar, Streep had the following to say:
Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts ... There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can't get it out of my head because it wasn't in a movie. It was real life.
In Nov. 2015, Trump reportedly mocked the physical disabilities of New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has arthrogryposis, a congenital condition affecting the joints, according to NBC News.
Streep went on to ask "well-heeled" Hollywood to support the Committee to Protect Journalists, a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of journalists around the world, because "we're going to need them going forward. And they'll need us to safeguard the truth."
Trump refused to take the criticism quietly, saying in a series of tweets:
Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never 'mocked' a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him 'groveling' when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!
