On September 20, 2010, Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) President Nativo (Larry) Lopez repeated the nonsensical statements about his identity that he has made in a sequel of tedious appearances in Los Angeles Superior Court on charges related to voter fraud .and voting in Los Angeles while living in Orange County. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/nativo-lopez-does-he-speak-for-mapa-and-mexican-americans
Does this man, who clamors for every opportunity in front of a microphone or camera and seems to be on every reporter's speed dial, really represent MAPA, Mexican Americans, and Latinos?
Judge for yourself. Here’s how it went on September 20, according to the official transcript, when Nativo appeared before the court and his dwindling flock of supporters.
The case was called and the prosecutor and public defender introduced themselves. Then Nativo announced:
“I'm present today as an agent for the secure party creditor special appearance for defendant Nativo Lopez herein after known as the defendant merely for the purpose of assisting the Court and the party to close this matter on the private side.”
Judge Patricia Schnegg replied, “I don't really understand anything that you say, but I respect your desire to say it. And it's on the record.”
Public Defender John Powers explained that Nativo was unable to be examined regarding mental competency since the prior hearing because of a glitch in the paperwork but that the Court had signed a new order. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/mapa-prez-nativo-lopez-trial-or-mental-competency-court
The Public Defender then asked the court to order Mr. Lopez to show his ID at the psychiatric evaluation appointment and cooperate. Judge Schnegg so ordered. Nativo responded:
“Well, I conditionally accept your offer, Your Honor, for such a psychiatric evaluation under proof of claim that the psychiatrist will accept private asset compensation and also under proof of the claim that the private administrative process for set -- offset and closure that has now been concluded with the district attorney's office and acquiescence would be -- make evaluation of a psychiatrist a moot issue.”
Judge Schnegg replied, “Thank you, sir.”
In the end, a new hearing date was set for Wednesday, October 20, 2010, Department 123, at 8:30 a.m. At that time, the decision regarding Nativo Lopez’ mental competency to stand trial may finally be made. Perhaps MAPA will have a representative present.
However, a recent announcement may indicate Nativo has found greener pastures in The Grassroots Immigrant Justice Network, “…a group which was recently formed by leaders in the immigrant rights and labor movements across the country. Initial members include…Nativo Lopez…” http://grassrootsimmigrantjusticenetwork.blogspot.com/
A post on October 1, 2010, was headlined, “GIJN Will March in Solidarity at October 2nd Demonstration in Washington, D.C.” and explained, “…the Grassroots Immigrant Justice Network will be participating in the ‘One Nation Working Together’ march… “
Nativo made another lucid recovery on October 10, 2010, for the San Francisco Chronicle article, “Whitman's ex-maid emerges as symbol,” which discusses Nicandra Santillan Diaz’ admission that she is an undocumented Mexican immigrant. SFGate reports:
“Immigrant rights activist Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican American Political Association, said, "Nicky has become the David in the campaign of Goliath - and, I believe, will ultimately be the demise of Meg Whitman." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/10/09/MN161FQC2U.DTL
Once again Nativo appears to have found a way to fit his political activism into his busy court schedule and between his troublesome bouts of identity confusion. Let's hope the court psychiatrist is taking notes.
If you missed seeing how “offended” Nativo Lopez was by CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comments that Mexican immigrants should learn English and immerse and assimilate into the mainstream fabric of American life, you can see catch him on the October 2006 O’Reilly show. http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/notes-from-the-banana-republic/friday-film-funnies-larry-nati/
