Whereas there are a lot of questions regarding whether the government’s handling of the Sept. 2012 Benghazi attacks qualifies as a ‘scandal’ or not, the same can’t be said for the IRS’ targeting of right-leaning groups and the Justice Department’s inexplicable decision to tap the Associated Press’ phones. Those two illicit activities, unlike Benghazi which has yet to be proven to be anything more than an unfortunate, mishandled tragedy, are blatant abuses of power that reflect very poorly on the Obama Administration.
Yesterday, Jon Stewart essentially called out the government for validating every existing conspiracy theory that’s out there. Not because two specific incidents somehow make all of the kooky ideas floating around true, but simply because the burden of proof has been shifted from ‘crazy person’ to ‘government.’
“Congratulations, President Barack Obama,” he said. “Conspiracy theorists who generally can survive in anaerobic environments have just had an algae bloom dropped on their f**king heads, thus removing the last arrow in your pro-governance quiver: Skepticism about your opponents.”
