While speaking with Parents Magazine in a Facebook town hall on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden handed out some free advice to critics of the administration’s efforts to ban assault weapons and put restrictions on the size of ammunition clips. Biden said that if people are truly concerned about self defense, they should buy a shotgun.
“I said, ‘Jill, if there's ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here ... walk out and put that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house,’” Biden said when talking about how he would want his wife to protect herself at their Delaware home.
According to USA Today, Biden thinks that assault weapons, like the AR-15, just aren’t the best choice for those wishing to defend themselves. “You don't need an AR-15 — it's harder to aim, it's harder to use, and in fact you don't need 30 rounds to protect yourself,” he said.
Biden has been at the forefront of determining the White House's gun-control agenda. He has continually reiterated that he and President Obama are both supporters of Second Amendment rights. However Biden believes that doesn’t mean that the government is completely powerless to set limits on weaponry in the interest of the public’s well being.
“How can I say this politely?” Biden said. “The Constitution does allow the government to conclude that there are certain types of weapons that no one can own. Now if that were not the case, then you should be able to go buy a flamethrower like the military ... if you're a billionaire you should be able to buy an F-15 … you should be able to buy an M-1 tank, you should be able to buy a machine gun, you should be able to buy a grenade launcher, and you can't do those things.”
