Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush claimed during tonight's GOP debate that his brother, President George W. Bush, kept America safe (video below).
Moments before Jeb made that claim, GOP candidate Donald Trump stated that he was the only candidate at the debate who opposed the Iraq War, notes RawStory, com.
Jeb fired back at Trump for saying in the past that the best negotiator with Iran would be Hillary Clinton.
Trump countered: “Your brother and your brother’s administration gave us Barack Obama because it was such a disaster those last three months that Abraham Lincoln couldn’t have been elected."
You know what, as it relates to my brother, there’s one thing I know for sure. He kept us safe. I don’t know if you remember, Donald. Do you remember the rubble, you remember the firefighter with his arms around him? He sent a clear signal that the United States would be strong and fight Islamic terrorism and he did keep us safe.
Slate noted that President Bush was given a brief on Aug. 6, 2001, that warned about a possibly Bin Laden attack.
The declassified brief posted online by CNN said that Bin Laden wanted to possibly "hijack a US aircraft" and FBI information "indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York."
President Bush's top anti-terrorism advisor Richard Clarke told CBS News in 2004:
I find it outrageous that the president is running for re-election on the grounds that he's done such great things about terrorism. He ignored it. He ignored terrorism for months, when maybe we could have done something to stop 9/11. Maybe. We'll never know.
Clarke added, "I think he's done a terrible job on the war against terrorism."
