Fashion designer, former model and First Daughter Ivanka Trump is no stranger to landing in headlines based on her attire. But this time it was her 5-year-old daughter, Arabella, who turned heads after wearing a dress from disgraced fashion designer John Galliano on June 1 during the Jewish holiday Shavuot.
Arabella was spotted in the brightly colored $115 camouflage Galliano dress as she rode her scooter along with Ivanka, dad Jared Kushner and 3-year-old brother, Joseph, notes the Daily Mail. The family was on its way to Jewish community center Friends of Lubavitch in Washington, D.C., to observe the holiday.
So what's wrong with the dress?
Galliano has been blacklisted from a number of couture patrons and fashion insiders after he went on a now-infamous rant in 2011 at a Paris bar. During the rant, Galliano said "I love Hitler" and made a number of racist and anti-Semitic remarks that lost him his job as Dior's creative director and even landed him in court, notes The Guardian.
One French couple said that Galliano repeatedly called them names such as "f***ing ugly Jewish b****" and "f***ing Asian b******" in addition to going off on a tirade about her appearance and clothing.
Galliano apologized for his behavior and attributed it to a combination of stress, alcohol and medication.
"These are not views that I hold or believe in," Galiano said at the time, according to The Guardian. " … I see someone who needs help, who's vulnerable. It's the shell of John Galliano. I see someone who's been pushed to the edge … Antisemitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologize for my behavior in causing any offense."
Galliano has since returned to the fashion world, working with such names as Oscar De La Renta and Maison Margiela, but his name still garners strongly negative reactions from some.
The Trump/Kushner household is devoutly Jewish, notes the Daily Mail. Ivanka converted before marrying Kushner in 2009, and her social media photos regularly show her and her family celebrating religious holidays.
"Oh no Ivanka didn't do her homework on this one!!!!!" one Daily Mail user commented.
Another said they did not believe Ivanka should have to research each designer before purchasing clothes.
Somebody else took issue with the dress for a different reason entirely: "I'm repelled by the idea of putting a small child into an expensive designer dress: one which, moreover, makes her look like a miniature adult, not a child," they said. "So very vulgar!"
Trump has not commented on the outfit.
