The NYPD is on high alert after a video surfaced on Twitter over the weekend, believed to be created by ISIS, which calls for the murder of Western police officers. ISIS spokesman, Abu Mohammad Al-Adnani, is heard in the video urging radicals to “strike their police, security and intelligence members, as well as their treacherous agents.” The United States is named in the video as a suggested target.
Even though there is no confirmed threat against New York specifically, it is being reported, that given the severity of the terrorist attacks in Paris last week, the NYPD is taking this treat very seriously. A memo released by the NYPD warns officers to "remain alert and consider tactics at all times while on patrol.” Officers are instructed to pay close attention to people’s hands, be extremely aware of approaching vehicles, and, when assigned to a post, officers are told not to sit in patrol cars as pairs, but rather have one officer outside the vehicle at all times.
In an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation,”NYPD deputy commissioner for counterterrorism, John Miller, stated that ISIS is “using the momentum from the Paris attacks in part of their messaging strategy to see ‘who can we get to follow this?' " It is feared that ISIS is targeting “lone wolf” type terrorists, who have been responsible for numerous attacks in the West in the past year.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI also sent a similar warning to police and military personnel in response to the reposting of the ISIS video.
