Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's aide who served as the former secretary of state's vice chair during her 2016 presidential run, is reportedly working on her marriage with former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York, even after his several sexting scandals.
In August 2016, Abedin announced her separation from Weiner after it was revealed that he had sent a photo of himself shirtless, wearing pants, and having an erection to a woman, the New York Post reported. The photo was taken as their son lay in bed beside him.
“After long painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband,” Abedin said at the time in a statement.
The photo was one of many sexting scandals to occur with Weiner. In 2011, he was forced to leave Congress after it was shown that he sent provocative pictures of himself to women on Twitter. In 2013, while Weiner was running for New York City mayor, additional sexts and photos were revealed. He had used the alias Carlos Danger to send them.
Also in 2016, a report by the Daily Mail, as obtained by the New York Post, accused Weiner of sending X-rated messages to a 15-year-old girl.
Regardless, according to New York Post sources, Abedin is trying to save her marriage.
“Huma has been working hard on her relationship with Anthony,” a source close to the Abedin family said. “He has been spending 80 to 90 percent of his time at the [Irving Place apartment] they share ... If there is a disagreement, he goes to his mother’s apartment in Brooklyn."
"Both [his and her] families are hoping they will reconcile," the source added.
Another source, who previously worked closely with former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, said the breakup between Weiner and Abedin was "more for optics for the campaign and [under] pressure from Hillary's camp."
The family friend said that regardless of Weiner's scandals, the couple is still is love. They blame "the pressures of the campaign and presidential race ... and him drifting into obscurity" for Weiner's 2016 relapse.
The friend added that since Weiner completed outpatient therapy for sex addiction in the fall of 2016, he has been continuing treatment in New York City.
“A lot of [their] friends believe this is an illness, that he is sick,” said the friend. But “Huma takes it into consideration that there’s been no affair, or physical contact that anybody is aware of. He never met [the women].”
Abedin and Weiner have been married since 2010 and have one son, 5-year-old Jordan Zain Weiner.
