Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaks out against her former rival in the Democratic presidential primary race, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, in her book, "What Happened," which will be released on Sept. 12.
According to an image of a page from the book tweeted by journalist and CauseWired founder Tom Watson, by "impugning" her character, Clinton accuses Sanders of helping fuel President Donald Trump's successful "Crooked Hillary" campaign.
During the race, Sanders often implied Clinton was corrupt because of money she allegedly took from Wall Street.
"Because we agreed on so much, Bernie couldn't make an argument against me in this area on policy, so he had to resort to innuendo and impugning my character," Clinton reportedly wrote.
"When I finally challenged Bernie during a debate to name a single time I changed a position or a vote because of a financial contribution he couldn't come up with anything," Clinton added. "Nonetheless, his attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump's 'Crooked Hillary' campaign."
She also argues Sanders didn't have the interests of the Democratic Party in mind when he ran for president.
"He isn't a Democrat -- that's not a smear, that's what he says," Clinton said, referring to the fact Sanders considered himself a Democratic Socialist and contemplated running as an independent. "He didn't get into the race to make sure a Democrat won the White House, he got in to disrupt the Democratic Party."
At the same time, she acknowledges his contributions toward her campaign after the primaries.
"He certainly shared my horror at the thought of Donald Trump becoming president, and I appreciated that he campaigned for me in the general election," she wrote, adding she also appreciates how many young people Sanders brought into politics.
Clinton's remarks about Sanders were met with hostility.
"Hillary lost because of HILLARY," wrote one Daily Mail reader. "Stop making excuses and look in the mirror. Most c.r.o.o.k.e.d politician I have ever seen."
"How can she seriously say what he did to her, she was underhanded throughout the entire primary," added another. "Then there's the rest of her history. Good grief!"
Some agreed with Clinton's argument.
"She's absolutely right," one person wrote. "Bernie did extreme harm to the democratic party. Bernie Bros were online harrassing women everywhere. Bernie earned the liberal misogynists' votes and the votes of the naive. He pretended to be a democrat and an outsider when he was neither. Congratulations Bernie supporters, your sexism got us Trump."
