Gov. Sam Brownback Apologizes to Teen Tweeter Emma Sullivan

Last week, Emma Sullivan, an 18-year-old high school senior from Fairway, Kansas, wrote a disparaging tweet on Twitter about Governor Sam Brownback, saying “he sucked in person,” and signed it with a #heblowsalot hash-tag.

Gov. Brownback’s office wasn’t pleased with the tweet, tracked Sullivan down and she eventually landed in the principal’s office at Shawnee Mission East High School.

Sullivan was ordered by her school to write a letter of apology, but she refused. Now, Gov. Brownback is the one apologizing via the following statement:

“My staff over-reacted to this tweet, and for that I apologize.  Freedom of speech is among our most treasured freedoms. I enjoyed speaking to the more than 100 students who participated in the Youth in Government Program at the Kansas Capitol.  They are our future. I also want to thank the thousands of Kansas educators who remind us daily of our liberties, as well as the values of civility and decorum. Again, I apologize for our over-reaction.”
